The Abbeyfield Society is a charitable organisation which provides housing with care for older people. It operates in the UK through approximately 500 local Abbeyfield societies, which are mainly managed by groups of volunteers. This site provides details of the Abbeyfield societies in the Thames North Region, which comprises the counties of Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire, Oxfordshire, and the north-west area of London. For general information about the national Abbeyfield Society, please refer to the Abbeyfield Society web site.
On the left is an alphabetical list of the locations of Abbeyfield societies in Thames North Region. Details of each society will be found on the relevant county page (see below), which provides contact information, including e-mail and web site addresses where appropriate. To go directly to the details for a particular society click its name in the list on the left. There are also two map pages which show the approximate location of each Abbeyfield society, one map for the counties of Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and Oxfordshire, and a separate map for London (NW).
Details of the societies are listed alphabetically within county, each county's list appearing on a separate page. Note that the names of most societies take the form the Abbeyfield Anytown Society. However a number of local societies have opted to pass the management of their houses to a professionally managed company, Abbeyfield UK Ltd, which was created by the (national) Abbeyfield Society in 2003. In such cases the name appears as Abbeyfield UK (Anytown) but still listed under its place name.
Most of the houses run by the society fall into the category of supported sheltered houses, providing board and lodging for elderly people who remain reasonably fit and are able to carry out normal daily personal tasks such as dressing and washing themselves. In addition there is a small number of residential care homes for those no longer able to perform these tasks, and an even smaller number of nursing homes for those who require constant medical attention. The societies offering Residential Care or Full Nursing Care are clearly marked as such on the details pages.
